Privacy Policy

Margin is a learning platform operated for a high school machine learning club. This page describes what the platform stores about you, who can access it, how long it is kept, and how to obtain a copy or have it deleted.

Who is responsible

Margin is built and operated by Neil Moudgil, a student who runs the club. Questions, corrections, and requests should be directed to [email protected]. Margin is not an official school system and is not operated by the school board.

What Margin stores about you

• Account details: Email address, your name if provided, your role in the club, your approval status, the club year you joined, the dates your account was created and approved, and whether the tutor is enabled for your account.
• Time on the site: While a lesson page is open, your browser reports every 15 seconds that it is still open, and Margin records that in 15-second blocks.
• Completion: Sessions you marked complete, and the date of completion.
• Lab work: Start and end times, outcome, and the saved state of your work so that it persists between visits.
• AI tutor conversations: Every question you send to the tutor and every reply it returns, stored against your account. Saved conversations are retained so that history is available across devices.
• Tutor personalization: The preferences you set, and short notes the tutor records about you as you chat. You can review and delete these at any time on your settings page.
• Server records: Margin’s own server does not keep a log of page requests or visitor IP addresses. It records errors, which can include an account identifier. Cloudflare, which delivers the site, receives visitor IP addresses; see third-party services below.

What Margin does not do

• Margin carries no advertising and uses no advertising networks.
• Margin uses no analytics product, tracking pixels, or session recording.
• No data is sold, rented, or shared with third parties for marketing.
• Margin does not track your location.
• Your progress is not displayed to other students.

Who can access your data

You can access your own data at any time. Club leaders holding an admin role (founder, co-founder, president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, and teacher sponsor) can access the club dashboard, which shows your name, the sessions you have opened and completed, the time you spent, and the full text of your AI tutor questions and the replies you received. No one outside club leadership has access to this data.

The AI tutor

The tutor is provided by Groq, Inc., a United States company, using the gpt-oss-120b model. Margin does not operate the model itself. Each request transmitted to Groq contains your question, the earlier messages in that conversation, the notes for the lesson you are reading, and your tutor personalization (your stated learning style, answer-length preference, background, interests, and the notes the tutor has recorded about you). Your name, email address, and account identifier are not sent. Groq processes this data under its own privacy policy.

Do not send personal, medical, or otherwise sensitive information to the tutor. Your conversations are stored in the club database and are visible to club leaders as described above.

Cookies and browser storage

Margin sets one cookie, and only after you sign in: your login token, which keeps you signed in between pages. Signed-out visitors are given no cookies at all. Blocking it prevents sign-in. It is not used for tracking and is not accessible to other websites.

Margin also uses your browser’s local storage for lab progress and a cached copy of recent tutor conversations. This data remains on your device and is removed when you clear your browser data.

Margin does not display a cookie consent banner. Consent requirements apply to tracking and advertising cookies, and Margin uses neither.

Third-party services

• Supabase: Hosts the database and the authentication system.
• Groq, Inc.: Processes AI tutor requests, receiving your question and the relevant lesson text.
• Cloudflare: Delivers the site. Every request passes through Cloudflare, which receives visitor IP addresses.
• jsDelivr: Serves the Python and machine learning libraries your browser downloads for labs and the transformer simulation, and receives your IP address. It receives no information about your account or your work.
• Google Cloud Storage: Serves the pre-trained image model used by the CNN explorer, and receives your IP address.
• Email provider: Delivers account emails such as sign-in confirmations and password resets, handling your email address for that purpose.

Processed on your device

The Teachable Machine simulation uses your webcam. Images are processed in your browser and are never transmitted or stored. Python code you run in a lab also executes in your browser.

Retention

Account and learning data is retained while your account exists. Deleting your account removes all of it, including tutor conversations. Server request logs rotate within a short period. Aggregate figures that do not identify individuals, such as how many members completed a session, may be retained.

Your choices

• Obtain a copy. Download everything Margin holds about you as a single file from your settings page.
• Delete your account. Also available on your settings page. This removes your profile, progress, lab work, tutor conversations, and personalization notes. It cannot be undone.
• Edit tutor notes. Delete any note the tutor has recorded about you, individually.
• Request a correction. Email [email protected].

Students under 18, and parents

Margin is intended for high school students, and most users are minors. Parents and guardians may email [email protected] to ask what is stored about their child, obtain a copy of it, or have the account deleted. Accounts are created only by the student, and every account requires approval by a club leader before any course material is accessible.

Security

Traffic is encrypted in transit. Passwords are hashed by the authentication provider and cannot be viewed by club leaders. If you request a password reset, members holding the founder, co-founder, or teacher sponsor role can set a new password on your account until you next sign in. The database enforces row level security, so access rules are applied by the database rather than by application code. Margin is a student-run project and cannot guarantee against all possible security failures.

Changes to this policy

The date above is updated whenever this page changes. Club members will be notified directly of material changes, such as the collection of a new category of data.
